Search Engine Optimization or also known as SEO is the method of affecting the visibility of a website or web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid, organic search results. As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what Northwest buyers are searching for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search engines and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content, HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.
Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing have become the defacto Yellow Pages. Remember the old days when the telephone company would drop off a huge phone book at your house and everyone’s house around you? There was an entire industry of telephone book delivery companies that made their living delivering these white and yellow page books where all Americans used to get information about local business. Those days are gone forever!
There are fundamentally two ways Internet searchers find information about products and services on each and every Search Engine. There is the “organic” listing of website search results known as… well you guessed it, Organic Search Results. Then there’s the official advertising part of search results called Search Engine Marketing, or otherwise known as Pay-Per-Click Advertising (PPC). The largest kid on the PPC block is Google and their product called Google AdWords. In a nutshell, you spend lots of time writing search related articles, post them on your website or blog and if your article relates to a given user’s search, it will show up on Google’s “organic” results, typically just below the advertising in the middle of the page. If your article is super popular and Google’s algorithm’s deem it worthy, you could get first page placement. Fairly hard to do… but the beauty is that your listing on Google is free. In other words, Google doesn’t charge anything for this listing unlike Pay-Per-Click Advertising of which you pay Google a given amount for every person that clicks on your ad.
